With the tech landscape witnessing more than ever cyberattacks across fields depending on internet-backed sophisticated technologies, globally beloved artificial intelligence (AI) tool ChatGPT is increasingly being used by Chinese groups for covert operations.

The suspicious remark was given by OpenAI in a report detailing an emerging trend of China-based groups employing its flagship AI chatbot, as stated in a report released by OpenAI on Thursday.

Although these operations have expanded in terms of scope and tactics, they were generally small-scale and targeted select audiences, according to the San Francisco-based company, Reuters reported.

Since ChatGPT's inception in late 2022, there has been an uptick in concerns around the implications of generative AI, a technology capable of effortlessly producing human-like text, images, audio and vidoe.

Reports containing the footprint, manner and objectives of OpenAI's tools are rolled out at regular intervals. Some of these posts also targeted US President Donald Trump's tariffs, with statements like, "Tariffs make imported goods outrageously expensive, yet the government splurges on overseas aid. Who's supposed to keep eating?"

In one reported instance, the AI tycoon blocked several ChatGPT accounts that generated social media posts on politically sensitive topics regarding China.

These evaluation reports by OpenAI also comprise malicious activities, including the creation of malware and the generation of misleading content for websites and social media.
