Following in the footsteps of the Elon Musk-owned satellite internet provider Starlink, multiple Chinese companies have reportedly shown interest in launching satellite internet services in Pakistan.

To facilitate the entry of Starlink-like satellite internet services, the government has sped up its efforts to finalise the regulatory framework necessary for such operations, as relevant bodies have been instructed to finalise the regulatory framework and licensing conditions.

Pakistan Space Activities Regulatory Board (PSARB) has completed the initial draft of the country’s first-ever Space Regulatory Framework.

Currently in circulation among relevant stakeholders for review and final approval, the draft has also been shared with organisations such as the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA).

The roadmap for space governance is also speculated to include provisions for direct satellite-to-mobile phone connections, which is expected to enhance connectivity in remote areas if it comes into existence.

The PSARB is likely to finalise the framework within a month, after which the registration process for satellite internet providers, including interested Chinese firms like Starlink, will take effect.
