Following a controversy in the echelons of tech, billionaire Elon Musk has urged his 227 million social media followers to cancel their Netflix subscriptions, accusing the streaming giant of promoting what he termed "transgender propaganda."
Musk's anti-Netflix campaign was reportedly provoked by a trend started by the conservative social media account Libs of TikTok.
The account cited the animated series "Dead End: Paranormal Park" and Netflix's corporate diversity efforts as reasons to drop the streaming service.
With the controversy gaining traction, Netflix's shares fell 2% on Wednesday and were down another 2% on Thursday on Wall Street. Musk, in a post on his platform X (called Twitter before his takeover), quoted the Libs of TikTok post and wrote, "Cancel Netflix."
In another post, Musk encouraged his followers to "Cancel Netflix for the health of your kids."
Musk, the world's wealthiest person, is said to have a personal connection to transgender issues, as his eldest daughter, Vivian Jenna Wilson, publicly transitioned in 2022 and legally changed her name and gender identity.
Over his daughter's changed gender identity, Musk claimed that his child was "killed" by the "woke mind virus" instilled at an elite California school.
