Recently, leading smartphone manufacturers have introduced artificial intelligence (AI) in their latest models. Google with its Pixel 8 and Samsung with the S24 have made significant advancements in AI. Apple is also set to launch its iPhone 16 series this autumn, featuring Apple Intelligence, driving the AI revolution further into our lives.
A Friday forecast from the International Data Corporation (IDC), a consumer data research firm, estimates that generative AI smartphone shipments may reach 234 million units by the end of the year, representing a growth of around 364%.
The firm defines Gen AI smartphones as devices with a system-on-a-chip capable of running on-device generative AI models that leverage a neural processing unit meeting certain benchmarks.

IDC expects that Gen AI smartphone sales will soon surpass the non-AI smartphone market. By 2028, Gen AI smartphone shipments could reach 912 million units, with around 1.2 billion smartphones sold each year.
Francisco Jeronimo, IDC Europe’s VP of data and analytics, said in Friday’s forecast, "This 'app-less' world will revolutionise the user experience, requiring the phone to better 'know' its users while ensuring personal data remains private and secure."
Some AI features have already been introduced in the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, such as real-time voice translation, and in the Google Pixel 8 Pro, which can generate summarised recorded conversations.
These upgraded features could serve as strong selling points, convincing users to upgrade their smartphones.
