As Google’s biggest annual developer conference, Google I/O, has come around the corner, slated to run from May 20 to 21, reports are being churned out on the internet, suggesting that the event will feature updates for Google-owned Android, Search, YouTube, Chrome, and Gemini, its proprietary (artificial intelligence) AI assistant.
Gemini updates expected at Google I/O 2025
AI is set to take the centre stage throughout the conference, with reports anticipating that Google will unveil a new version of its Gemini Ultra model, claimed to be the company’s most advanced AI so far.
On the sidelines of a new Gemini Ultra model, two new premium subscription plans, including Gemini Premium Plus and Gemini Premium Pro, are also on the cards, widening the existing Gemini Advanced tier, which is currently priced at $20 per month.
Details regarding the new subscription plans and their capabilities have not been disclosed.
Android 16 feature updates expected at Google I/O 2025
Coming to Google's software segment, Android 16 is most likely to step into the limelight. Although a separate event, the Android Show, has been dedicated to covering the new Android update and will be held before the I/O 2025, Android 16 is still rumoured to be featured prominently during the event.
Android 16 has been reported to be showcased with enhanced notifications, improved accessibility features, lock screen widgets, and support for Bluetooth’s Auracast technology. The update might as well bring a visual redesign called Material 3 Expressive.
Apart from the aforementioned areas, Google I/O 2025 could also take the wraps off the developments in Android XR, Google's own platform for mixed reality and Wear OS that powers smartwatches and wearables.
