YouTube on Wednesday launched new features to its Premium Lite plan globally, which will allow subscribers to use background play and offline downloads.

The video streaming platform, in a blog post, said that these advancements to YouTube Premium Lite aim to make a more complete alternative for users who want fewer ads and playback controls, without paying for the full YouTube Premium subscription. "YouTube Premium Lite subscribers can now play videos in the background."

What's new in YouTube Premium Lite update?

YouTube update allows users to continue listening to content, such as podcasts, interviews, music videos, or long-form discussions, when the screen is turned off or while using other apps.

"We’re excited for today’s update and to continue testing and building products that best meet our users’ needs," said YouTube, adding that users will easily get access to gaming, fashion, beauty, news, and other content.

The company has also allowed offline downloads for Premium Lite users, letting them download videos on YouTube over WiFi or mobile networks and watch them later without an active internet connection. This feature is useful for users who consume content during travel or in areas with unstable connectivity.

YouTube Premium Lite subscription price

The individual plan for YouTube Premium Lite starts at $13.99/month, while it's also available as a yearly subscription that costs $16.39/year.
