A security alert has been issued by the National Cyber Emergency Response Team (NCERT) regarding an unexpected increase in phishing attacks that target citizens via phone calls, WhatsApp messages, and SMS.
The purpose of these phoney calls and messages is to defraud unwary users of their financial and personal information.
Phishing attacks are intended to deceive users into disclosing private information, frequently by taking advantage of their curiosity, urgency, or trust.
How to avoid phishing scams?
Attackers may employ a number of strategies, such as posing as reputable individuals to elicit prompt responses, generating a sense of urgency to encourage prompt action, or tempting users with attention-grabbing or startling subject lines to encourage clicks.
It is crucial to confirm sources by double-checking sender information and getting in touch with organisations via official channels in order to protect yourself against phishing attacks.
Additionally, you should be wary of links, avoiding dubious URLs and hovering over them to verify their true destination.
Protecting against phishing attacks can also be achieved by using strong passwords, updating software, and routinely checking accounts.
Report and block fraudulent numbers right away if you think you may be being targeted. As soon as possible, change your passwords and report the incident to the appropriate authorities.
As part of the government's continuous awareness campaign, "Stay Safe from Phishing – Protect Your Information", National CERT urges people to view and distribute awareness videos to friends and family to teach them how to spot and steer clear of online scams and dishonest digital practices.
