The government has announced key steps toward the launch of 5G services in Pakistan. The development was shared on Tuesday during a joint press conference addressed by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and Minister for Information Technology Shaza Fatima.
Addressing the media at the press briefings, Fatima said that the government had started preparing for an auction of 600 MHz telecom spectrum, which is one of the most important steps for the implementation of 5G services in the country. Accordingly, she confirmed that this whole process is expected to be completed in four to six months.
Aurangzeb said the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) has approved the recommendations submitted by the Spectrum Advisory Committee.
"It is an important policy achievement and a testament to the government's dedication to its Digital Pakistan vision," he said.
Regarding internet connectivity, Fatima stressed that it has become the backbone of the digital economy, adding: “And on the internet, what’s important to know is that it’s not just about the introduction of ‘5G,’ but it’s also about the speed, quality, and widespread access of the internet.” According to her, there are plans to finish the spectrum sale by the last week of January or the first week of February 2026.
The IT minister further stated that the approved recommendations would shortly be tabled in the federal cabinet for their final approval. The minister assured that consultations with telecom operators as well as other important stakeholders would form a major part of this process.
