In contrast to the government proclaiming the next fiscal year to bring relief to the salaried class, the federal government is likely to increase fixed charges for domestic gas consumers from July 1.
It has emerged that the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the federal cabinet has decided to maintain gas prices to protect household consumers. However, it greenlit adjustments only to the fixed charges in order to recover asset costs.
In light of a summary approved by the Petroleum Division, which sought approval for a revised natural gas pricing structure for the fiscal year 2025-26, the fixed charges for domestic consumers, who previously payed Rs400, will be jacked up to Rs600.
Users previously paying Rs1,000 will now be have to pay Rs1,500, while consumers previously paying Rs2,000 will see their fixed charge surge to Rs3,000.
This hike in gas' fixed charges hinges on approval from the federal cabinet following the ECC's decision.
The adjustments are designed to address the financial sustainability of the gas sector while protecting household consumers from fluctuating gas prices.
