The Sindh government of Pakistan has introduced an innovative system for the registration of vehicles across the province.
According to a public notice issued by the Sindh Excise, Taxation, and Narcotics Control Department, new security-featured smart cards have been introduced replacing the conventional vehicle registration booklets.
This move is part of the government's latest drive making it mandatory for over three million private and commercial vehicle owners to obtain new registration number plates printed with the Ajrak design for their vehicles within three months.
Smart cards for vehicle registration
Issued by the government, the new smart cards are incorporated with advanced security features, and designed to prevent any kind of tampering or fraudulent vehicle registrations.
"Vehicle owners are now required to obtain smart cards instead of the existing booklet as proof of registration," the notice stated.
The new smart card registration system will be effective starting from April 3, 2025. Moreover, the current vehicle registration booklets will no longer be valid, the notice read.
Additionally, the excise and taxation secretary has advised the vehicle owners to visit any motor registration authority to obtain smart cards before the stated deadline.
