As Pakistan braces for the much-anticipated launch of 5G, the government of Pakistan is reported to be considering allowing the nationwide launch first and collecting 5G spectrum fees later.

The possibility of the 5G rollout in Pakistan preceding the hefty upfront spectrum costs came to light as authorities seem to be readjusting the 5G spectrum auction policy.

Privy to the development, insiders from the Ministry of Information Technology disclosed that as part of the revised 5G policy, the federal government is expected to prioritise 5G availability across Pakistan within a short timeframe.

As it stands, revenue collection from the launch of 5G services countrywide will be the secondary objective. These facilitative measures are purportedly being implemented in line with the government's efforts to ensure long-term economic and technological outcomes.

Key government officials engaged in Pakistan's 5G spectrum policy are going through different international spectrum allocation models.

The models under examination include a free license model actively enforced in Saudi Arabia, wherein telecom companies are provided with spectrum at no cost, however, on the condition of timely returns.
