Great Wall Motors (GWM) has issued an urgent recall of its popular Cannon Alpha ute in Australia due to a significant safety issue with the dual-cab ute's electric power steering system.

The recall includes approximately 2,500 Cannon Alphas driven by employees in Australia, covering the diesel, hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions manufactured between 2023 and 2025.

Interestingly, the Cannon Alpha by GWM is a dual-cab ute and has been the vehicle of choice for both the family vehicle and commercial segments. However, GWM recalls taking a serious tone quickly based on the specific problem.

A manufacturing fault in the assembly of the electro, e.g., electric power steering (EPS) system's wiring, may rub against the ute's driveshaft due to the fixed length of the wiring harness.

Over time, it may wear down the protective layer of the wiring harness and result in either a complete power steering malfunction or unexpected loss of engine power while the vehicle is in motion/while driving.

These failures have very serious road safety implications for drivers and other road users due to the sudden loss of either steering or power in motion, resulting in a predicted increase in crash risk. The overall recall includes a total of 2,458 Cannon Alpha vehicles.

GWM Australia has advised that all owners of the affected models should contact their nearest GWM dealer as soon as possible. All inspection and repairs will be free of charge.

The company also published a full list of affected Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) on its official website so customers can verify if their ute is included.

Owners are strongly urged not to ignore this recall. In case of sudden power steering loss, drivers are advised to pull over safely, avoid further driving, and arrange for towing to a dealership.
