PlayStation is set to release Helldivers 2 on Xbox Series X/S on August 26, the same day that Xbox will release Gears of War: Reloaded on PS5. This is an important milestone in gaming history because this is the first time that either franchise has crossed over to nearly rival platforms, representing an end of sorts to the typical "console war."
Helldivers 2 is a third-person co-op shooter developed by Arrowhead Game Studios and published by PlayStation, known for its chaotic, teamwork-based battles to defend "Super Earth."
Previously, Helldivers was exclusive to PlayStation, but the choice to allow Helldivers to be available to Xbox users demonstrates how Sony is willing to explore cross-platform possibilities.
Meanwhile, Gears of War: Reloaded is Xbox's reimagining of the iconic Gears franchise, a gritty, cover-based shooter that cushioned the Xbox brand within its grasp.
PlayStation users will be able for the first time to experience the bloody, chainsaw-gun mechanic that has been part of Xbox's identity for nearly 20 years.
For almost a generation, prominent news articles focused on exclusivity battles between PlayStation and Xbox, created by the natural rivalry between the PS2 and Xbox and the current war of the PS5 and Xbox Series X.
However, Xbox has already been bringing games like Forza Horizon 5 to other platforms, and now Sony is following suit.
