Honda has announced the return of the Prelude, a sporty coupe, with an all-new hybrid-electric powertrain. The electrified version of the automaker’s coupe is set to arrive in the US in late 2025.

This marks the first new Prelude release in over two decades, following the concept version announced last year.

Honda has a strong track record with hybrid vehicles, which it views as a crucial step towards full electric vehicles (EVs).

Currently, hybrid-electric trims make up more than 50% of Accord and CR-V sales, and the newly introduced Civic hybrid is expected to represent about 40% of Civic sales. Cumulative sales of Honda electrified vehicles have surpassed 1 million units.

Honda hybrid Prelude features

The hybrid Prelude will debut Honda’s new S+ Shift mode, which aims to enhance Linear Shift Control for maximum driver engagement. The upcoming vehicle will feature a hybrid powertrain with two motors, although it won’t be a dual-motor or all-wheel-drive vehicle.

Honda’s hybrid system has used two motors for several generations, with one motor acting as a generator and the other as a traction motor.

The fully electric Honda Prologue, based on GM’s Chevy Equinox EV, has seen brisk sales since its US launch earlier this year. Honda plans to unveil a production-ready Honda Zero model at CES next year.

The company remains committed to achieving carbon neutrality for all its products and corporate activities by 2050, including 100% EV sales by 2040.
