Pakistan internet users will likely be experince slower speeds and service disruptions after submarine cable cuts occurred in Saudi waters near Jeddah, the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) Group confirmed on Saturday.
In an official statement by PTCL, the damage to the submarine cables has caused a decrease in the amount of internet bandwidth available on the SMW4 and IMEWE systems, which are two international cables that bring internet to Pakistan.
However, the interventions will possibly lead to significant degradation of service, particularly during hours of peak usage.
PTCL stated that international partners were working on a priority basis to replace the damaged cables. In the interim, PTCL’s local technology teams are developing alternative bandwidth routing to mitigate the overall impact on customers.
“We sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding during this time,” PTCL Group Spokesman said.
Pakistan uses several submarine cable systems for its global internet route. With continuous damage to underwater cables happening over the years, Pakistan has been suffering from low bandwidth, damaging affected browsing, video streaming, and cloud-based services.
