Apple’s latest operating system updates iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15 Sequoia introduce a noticeable advancement for gamers — officially compatible with wired Xbox controllers.

Earlier, Apple devices were compatible with wireless Xbox and PlayStation controllers through Bluetooth, but when it came to wired connections, only PlayStation controllers were supporting wired Xbox controllers.

This significant upgrade has designated a step forward in broadening gaming accessory support across Apple’s ecosystem.

Connecting to Apple Devices with Lightning ports

If you're using an iOS device with a Lightning port, like older iPhones or iPads, you'll be required a Lightning to USB Camera Adapter to connect your wired Xbox controller. The adapter improves the USB connection, ensuring your controller communicates efficiently with your device.

Simply plug the controller in utilising a USB-C to USB-C cable to begin the wired connection.

What to expect when you’re connecting Apple devices?

On iOS 18 and iPadOS 18: The wired Xbox controller does not showcase in the Bluetooth settings since it's connected via USB, not Bluetooth.

On macOS 15 Sequoia: Upon first connection, macOS displays an accessory permissions dialogue confirming from the user: "Do you want to connect Microsoft Controller to this Mac?"
