Since the commencement of the new US administration after US President Donald Trump assumed office, tariffs imposed by him have caused a stir in the global trade realms, leading to an unprecedented uptick in mobile phone prices.
After the implementation of Trump's newly announced trade taxes, the latest iterations of Apple iPhone are expected to cost as much as Rs1 million ($3,500).
In his vocally crafted note on Friday, Dan Ives of Wedbush Securities warned that Trump's efforts to revive 1980s-style American manufacturing through heavy tariffs might trigger what he called an economic Armageddon, particularly in the tech space.
Trump's recent tariffs include 50% levies on Chinese imports and 32% on Taiwan-imported goods, the two major players of electronics production.
Propelled by the tariffs in question, prices across electronics product lineups will rise by 40-50%, and iPhone models that came for $1,000 will be sold for around $3,500, according to Ives.
The tech evangelist anticipated that these trade hurdles will pull back US tech industry by a decade. He called these tariffs a bad science experiment which would significantly impede the progress in AI developments as well as the broader technology trade.
