Karachi authorities have extended the ban on two-seater and four-seater rickshaws to six additional major roads, bringing the total number of restricted routes to 26.
The move aims to improve traffic flow in the city’s increasingly congested areas.
Karachi Commissioner Syed Hasan Naqvi announced the decision on Thursday, following a recommendation from Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Traffic Peer Muhammad Shah. The ban has been enforced under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).
The extension includes Shahrah-e-Faisal, II Chundrigar Road, Shahrah-e-Quaideen, Shershah Suri Road, Shaheed-e-Millat Road, and Abdullah Haroon Road, extending up to Do Talwar.
Earlier, a notification issued on October 17, 2025, banned rickshaws on 20 main roads.
Severe traffic congestion has been a problem the city has faced; unauthorised rickshaws operate within self-designated routes, causing blockages and creating safety concerns.
According to the traffic authorities, rickshaws plying without permits have turned out to be a source of obstruction on vital arteries.
The Sindh government has also implemented other traffic measures: the ban on heavy vehicles during the daytime in Karachi and a speed limit of 30 km/h for HTVs that operate within the city.
