In a step towards the normalisation of eco-friendly transport, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has announced electric bikes (e-bikes) for employees of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), with the aim to reduce fuel costs and carbon emissions.

It has emerged that the distribution of these e-bikes will be observed phase-wise, with the KMC acquiring 20 e-bikes in the first phase of the project, each costing Rs215,000, below the market price of Rs240,000.

"This is not just about electric bikes; it’s about building a greener and more sustainable Karachi,” Wahab stated.

The initial batch is said to be reserved for dispatch riders, with women employees likely to receive priority in the second phase.

The first charging station has also been installed at the KMC headquarters to facilitate the adoption and upkeep of e-bikes. All EV charging points will be monitored through a dedicated mobile app to ensure transparency and efficient usage.

The mayor was of the view that reducing reliance on fuel-based vehicles will help lower operational costs and decrease Karachi’s carbon footprint, paving the way for a cleaner and more sustainable future.
