The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) Assembly has passed the Digital Media Bill 2025, which applies the provincial media regulations to influencers, vloggers, and social media outlets. This is a huge expansion of media regulation in the province.

The bill, formally entitled the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Press, Newspapers, News Agencies and Books Registration (Amendment) Bill, was submitted for approval to the Provincial Law Minister Aftab Alam and was passed by majority vote.

Under the new law, advertising firms employing social media platforms must register, and only cable operators licensed by PEMRA will be allowed to provide a cable service in KPK.

The members of the assembly contended that it was necessary to regulate digital creators in order to modernise the provincial media laws to reflect the changing communications landscape.

In this same session, the Assembly put off debate on the Ease of Doing Business Bill 2025, after opposition members objected to the debate going forward.

Moreover, the Speaker of the Assembly lambasted the law minister for being unprepared, and he instructed him to come back with proper explanations in the next sitting.
