The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government is exploring the possibility of partnering with Elon Musk’s Starlink to improve the region’s internet services. Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on Science and Technology Dr. Shafqat Ayaz mentioned that if the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) does not address the internet issues, the provincial government will formally request Starlink’s satellite internet services.
The province has been facing slow internet speeds, including 4G and Wi-Fi, which have impacted the local IT sector.
This is particularly challenging for freelancers, entrepreneurs, and women running online businesses. Dr. Ayaz emphasised the need for fast and reliable internet to support these ventures and prevent financial losses.

Moreover, Dr. Ayaz noted that the KP government had previously raised concerns with PTA officials, who visited the IT department in Peshawar and offered technical solutions.
However, there has been no significant improvement in the situation. He also criticised the federal government for neglecting the province’s connectivity needs, suggesting political motives behind the delays.
Starlink, a satellite-based internet service, could provide a much-needed solution, ensuring high-speed internet access for KP. Dr. Ayaz believes this move would support the growth of the province’s digital economy and create new opportunities for its residents.
