Microsoft has introduced new Windows Copilot Runtime at Microsoft Build 2024. CEO Satya Nadella likened this to a big moment like Win32, allowing developers to build artificial intelligence (AI) more easily into their Windows apps.

Windows Copilot Runtime, which is a collection of around 40 generative AI models, will have the capabilities like Recall and Super Resolution. Microsoft described it as ‘a new layer’ of Windows. It works with the vector-based system specific to each Copilot+ PC, called semantic index and allows AI applications as well as third-party apps to run without an internet connection.

Copilot Runtime is built on the latest powerful hardware including a Neural processing unit (NPU) and a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU).

It has also several components, ranging from high-level APIs to support for machine learning models. Moreover, Windows Copilot Runtime is already being used by the Recall feature, as demoed yesterday, Cocreator AI image generator feature in Paint, Restyle Image feature in Photos app, and several 3rd party apps like Davinci Resolve, CapCut and more.

This initiative by Microsoft will spread out a new wave of AI technology on Windows in the future.
