To enhance security of the national database, the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) is set to implement a facial recognition system based on its verified database.

This was announced by the chairman of Nadra while highlighting that citizens' biometric information is being securely stored in a local database. He cautioned that this sensitive data is at risk of misuse and theft.

During a recent meeting, he announced that the same policy will be applied to cancelled identity cards issued after 2017, adding that only active identity cards will remain eligible to register SIM cards, while registered SIMs linked to deceased individuals or expired cards will be blocked.

The facial recognition system will also assist citizens who face difficulties with fingerprint verification. Similarly, instructions will be issued to relevant authorities to cease the separate storage of citizens' biometric data.

Federal Minister for Interior Mohsin Naqvi emphasised the importance of implementing facial recognition technology nationwide by 31 December 2025.

Nadra services have been expanded to 44 tehsils and union councils where such facilities were previously unavailable.

By 30 June, all 31 union councils in Islamabad will have access to NADRA services.
