As Pakistan has long been unable to break free from persistent internet blackouts, the Universal Service Fund (USF) is preparing to roll out new connectivity projects in the underserved regions of Tharparkar and Sargodha.
The new initiatives to fix Pakistan's internet woes follow surveys by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), revealing that several areas have little to no access to internet or voice call services.
In a written correspondence with the National Assembly Standing Committee on IT and Telecom, USF confirmed that the projects have already been approved by its board and are now in their final stages before implementation.
The IT standing committee also required USF to provide a complete list of all approved projects scheduled for the next three to five years.
These measures are believed to strengthen digital access and address communication gaps that lack reliable connectivity.
On the sidelines, the committee also raised concerns that telecom services remain out of reach for residents even in areas where fibre optic infrastructure is available. In response, the PTA was instructed to push telecom companies to make these services accessible and to closely monitor their performance.
On the issue of internet suspension in District Panigur, the committee outlined the damage caused to key sectors that heavily rely on internet services.
In addition to discussions revolving around the provision of basic internet services, it was recommended that Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services remain restricted due to security issues.
To reinstate internet connectivity in the affected regions, the committee directed the ministries of IT, Interior, provincial authorities, and law enforcement agencies to come up with a joint solution and ensure uninterrupted connectivity through the existing fibre network.
