Old School RuneScape (OSRS), a classic iteration of the MMORPG RuneScape, has surpassed its all-time player record. On August 3, 2025, there were over 240,000 players concurrently online, marking the most played version of RuneScape in years.
Released in 2013, OSRS remains extremely popular amongst both new and veteran players alike, even 12 years later.
For the uninitiated, OSRS is a nostalgia-inducing version of the MMORPG that appeals to long-time fans of the playstyle of RuneScape. It provides a far more traditional experience than its newer counterpart, RuneScape 3.
Players will find pixel-style graphics, player-driven updates, and deep quest lines, making it one of the most entertaining and best free MMORPGs in 2025.
The surge in player numbers came shortly after Varlamore: The Final Dawn launched, a major content update released on July 23, 2025. Jagex, OSRS's developer, has kept the game alive with active updates which include improved content, such as a new skill, Sailing, and regularly engaging community events.
As recorded by tracking site MisplacedItems, the recorded harmonised number is 240,756. Jagex then proceeded to celebrate the record on social media, thanking fans for their continued support of the game.
Despite being over a decade old, Old School RuneScape is still going strong. With regular updates, community support, and positive reviews on Steam, it's no surprise that OSRS continues to top the charts in the MMORPG category.
