OpenAI has announced to open its first office in New Delhi later this year in a bid to solidify its footprint in India, its second-largest market in terms of user base.

The ChatGPT maker is backed by Microsoft, and has established a legal entity in India. The AI giant is currently busy recruiting a local team in India, Reuters reported, citing an official company announcement.

The significant move from ChatGPT's parent comes on the heels of the most affordable ChatGPT plan debuting in India at $4.60, aimed at the nearly one billion internet users in the country.

However, OpenAI faces legal challenges in India, with news outlets and book publishers claiming that the firm has used their content without permission to train ChatGPT. The company has denied these allegations.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, commented, “Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and build AI for India, and with India.”

In India, OpenAI competes with rivals like Google’s Gemini and the AI startup Perplexity, both of which offer advanced features for free to many users.

Newly released market data has showed India's weekly active ChatGPT users quadrupling over the past year.
