With Lahore reeling from significant smog and air pollution aggravated by the public transportation system's reliance on gasoline, the government of Punjab is set to add over 600 electric buses to the city’s public transportation system.
The development was brought to light by Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari, who disclosed that the electric buses will be purchased to improve Lahore's public transport and help mitigate pollution and the ongoing smog crisis, according to The News.
Adding to the delight of those residing in the Punjab region, this announcement follows the Capital Development Authority (CDA) receiving a batch of 146 electric buses (e-buses) out of 160 from China. The remaining 14 e-buses are reportedly en route, and CDA officials have noted that construction of the Zero Point charging station has also begun.
On the sidelines of unveiling plans to revamp Lahore’s transportation system, Bokhari also underscored the launch of the "Dastak" app by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, which will allow people to access 60 different services directly from their smartphones.
The Punjab information minister made these remarks while reflecting on other public-serving programmes, including shrimp farming, a skills development initiative for transgender individuals, a model fish market in Lahore, and the "Himat Card" programme.
