Gaming is one of the fastest-growing global entertainment markets, where players engage with computer and mobile games for enjoyment, skill and competition. However, Pakistan is making a significant leap into this growing sector with the opening of its first Centre of Excellence in Gaming and Animation (CEGA).

The project, led by the Ignite National Technology Fund, had its official inauguration ceremony on August 1, 2025. The project was awarded to a leading media company following a competitive bidding and evaluation process that took over a year and an award of Rs2.52 billion.

CEGA will be operating for 5 years and 3 months and will include a state-of-the-art facility, co-working space and programming with specialised training to support young professionals learning high-demand skills in gaming and animation.

Pakistan's gaming industry provided revenue of around $170 million last year and employs over 8000 professionals in this industry.

With 195 million mobile subscribers, 119 million 3G/4G users and over 30,000 ICT graduates each year, experts believe that Pakistan has the talent and factors to contribute significantly to the gaming and animation market around the world.

The journey to launching CEGA began in May 2024 with multiple procurement processes, technical and financial assessments and grievance hearing periods. After the Ignite Board of Directors approved the work, the contract was signed in May 2025.

Moreover, the project follows Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) rules to ensure transparency.

Ignite officials say CEGA will not only improve Pakistan’s creative and technical skills but also create jobs, promote innovation, and connect the local industry with international markets.
