Pakistan is preparing to take a major step toward faster connectivity as the government plans a 5G rollout in Pakistan, aiming to double current internet speeds by mid-2026.
Fifth-generation (5G) technology is the next level of mobile networks, offering much faster data speeds, lower delays, and better capacity than existing 4G services. Officials say it is no longer a luxury but a basic digital need.
5G rollout in Pakistan
Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja shared these details during an exclusive media briefing on Wednesday ahead of the upcoming 5G auction.
“The auction has been structured, together with the help of NERA, which is an international consulting firm, to ensure that the pricing is fair,” said the minister.
Adding that the pricing has also been done carefully to allow the telecom operators to invest not only in spectrum but also in network improvements.
The minister has confirmed that most of the groundwork in regard to the Pakistan 5G network launch has been accomplished already. These include spectrum planning, auction, and facilitation with the help of the relevant authorities as well as telecommunication operators.
To begin with, 5G services will primarily concentrate on metropolitan areas that have a bigger demand and supporting infrastructure. The success of this auction can be measured if over 50% of the 600 MHz bands are sold.
There is an understanding that the current state of the internet in Pakistan is not very strong, and the telecom carriers are witnessing increasing costs and declining revenues.
It is anticipated that the higher speeds provided by 5G can help this sector by allowing businesses and innovative solutions. Even if the spectrum is partially used, there would be an improvement in the speeds.
Fatima also talked about challenges like legal issues related to the merger of Telenor and PTCL, which has been delaying progress. In satellite internet like Starlink, she stated that the government has been working out a policy before allowing its services.
