Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja on Friday announced that Pakistan will auction seven spectrum bands for 5G launch next month. Five are being offered for the first time in the country, while two bands have been auctioned previously.

The IT minister said that Pakistan's telecom sector is entering a critical expansion phase for the planned 5G auction. Pakistan operates on 274 MHz of spectrum, one of the lowest levels in the region. 606 MHz of spectrum was vacated last year, while the federal cabinet has granted approval of the release of nearly 600 MHz.

Khawaja said improved spectrum availability will let the launch of 5G services and enhance 4G performance, with rollout expected in major cities within 6-7 months after the auction.

She added that three new submarine cables have landed in Pakistan over the past 18 months, which will enhance overall internet quality to give people a better speed.

On device affordability, she said the government plans to introduce a mobile phone leasing policy to make 5G-enabled smartphones more accessible, as the current number of compatible devices remains low.

The IT minister announced that the cabinet has also approved the Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) policy, allowing new operators to enter Pakistan's market. MVNOs are expected to increase competition, attract foreign investment, and expand consumer choice.

PTA plans to expand broadband access, including issuing district-level C-Wise licenses to promote fiberisation in underserved areas and abolishing right-of-way charges, which will improve internet quality nationwide.
