Following the allocation of spectrum reportedly deemed enough to power Pakistan's upcoming 5G launch, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a new timeline for the 5G spectrum auction.
When will Pakistan's 5G spectrum auction take place?
Originally scheduled to take place in December 2025, the auction will now be carried out in the first quarter of 2026.
The delay comes after a report from National Economic Research Associates (NERA), a US-based consultancy, which was presented to the Spectrum Advisory Committee during a closed meeting.
The Frequency Allocation Board (FAB) has approved the allocation of 606 MHz spectrum across six vital bands: 700, 1800, 2100, 2300, 2600, and 3500 MHz, which is expected to significantly increase Pakistan's capacity for nationwide 5G deployment.
NERA's report includes the following:
- An assessment of market readiness for 5G adoption.
- Recommendations for policy and infrastructure enhancements to support broadband growth.
- A phased auction strategy for paired and unpaired spectrum.
- Pricing analysis and flexible payment options for bidders.
The committee will review these recommendations before forwarding them to the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) and the federal cabinet.
The Minister of IT will then issue the official policy directive for the auction, marching towards digital transformation in Pakistan.
