The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is being questioned over delays in providing satellite internet licenses to two companies.
The National Assembly Standing Committee on IT and Telecom was informed that applications from Starlink and Shanghai Space Technology are still under review by the Pakistan Space Activities and Research Board.
Starlink, which aims to provide satellite-based internet services in Pakistan, submitted its application in 2022, while Shanghai Space Technology applied in 2024.
During the meeting, PTA Chairman Hafeezur Rehman confirmed that the approval process is in its final stages, and licences could be issued within six months.
PTA to ensure faster internet expansion
Committee Chairman Syed Aminul Haque expressed frustration over the delay, highlighting that from 2022 to 2025, the government has only been discussing possibilities rather than taking action. Other committee members also raised concerns about slow internet speeds and network disruptions across the country.
One member, Ahmed Atiq Anwar, reviewed that even areas 40 kilometres from Lahore lack reliable internet connectivity. The PTA chief acknowledged the issue, stating that telecom companies are reluctant to expand to remote regions due to low profitability.
The PTA chairman revealed that the telecom sector has generated Rs1.70 trillion in taxes over the past six years, yet the government has not made significant investments in IT infrastructure.
Moreover, he pointed to India’s $13 billion telecom investment, which has resulted in 3.5 million kilometres of fibre optic cables being laid across the country.
Meanwhile, the committee also discussed pending payments of Rs78 billion owed by Long Distance and International (LDI) companies. Officials warned that cancelling their licences could disrupt 50% of ATMs nationwide, as banking operations rely on these networks.
