Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) highlighted several major challenges in the launch of 5G across the country, including significant investment, long-term return on investment (ROI), and the availability of compatible smartphones.

The PTA outlined that the deployment of the 5G spectrum requires substantial investment to upgrade existing infrastructure, including the installation of cutting-edge antennas, extensive fibre optic backhaul, and more. This poses a significant financial pressure on telecom operators, as investing the required capital can create challenges, especially in a price-competitive market.

In addition, the ROI may be a gradual process, prompting telecom operators to carefully consider large capital expenditures. Government incentives and PPPs could therefore be significant in reducing financial pressure and fostering necessary investments. Overcoming the digital divide remains an essential challenge for the widespread rollout of 5G across the country.

Urban areas are expected to immediately benefit from the advanced infrastructure. However, remote and rural areas may lag due to higher costs and logistical hurdles associated with expanding 5G coverage to these regions.

Moreover, the availability of 5G-compatible handsets remains a significant challenge to widespread 5G adoption. Consumers and businesses may experience difficulties in accessing affordable 5G devices, which could hinder adoption rates.

Another major challenge the PTA highlighted is the lack of awareness regarding 5G technology. Many consumers and businesses are yet to fully comprehend the potential benefits of 5G, creating a gap in trust and understanding.

In this regard, the government and telecom operators will need to invest in public education campaigns to spread awareness, build trust, and promote widespread 5G adoption.

It is important to note that, despite these challenges, the 5G implementation process has already begun, with efforts underway for its successful launch. All stakeholders are actively preparing to introduce 5G mobile connectivity by mid-2025, PTA added.
