The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on Tuesday issued a clear warning after a fake notification spread rapidly across social media.
The forged document claimed that group administrators on platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook must remove all foreign members. PTA confirmed that the message is fabricated and carries no official standing.
The fake ban notice was released as an official circular and was forwarded extensively among Pakistani users. It falsely suggested that group admins could face penalties for failing to comply with the supposed directive.
PTA explained that it has not implemented any new rule, restriction, or monitoring requirement related to foreign participants in online groups.
PTA Media Affairs Spokesperson said that the authority monitors the spread of misinformation and intervenes when false claims begin to mislead the public.
The spokesperson said PTA has issued instructions for no data control related to social media groups and asked users not to rely on unverified posts.
The telecom regulator therefore advised the public to authenticate any regulatory information from the official website and social channels of PTA.
Officials also pointed out that such fake advisories have circulated in the past, often designed to create confusion or spark unnecessary concern among users.
PTA reminded the citizens that sharing fake regulatory documents could also fall under the relevant provisions of Pakistani cyber laws, which allow action for distributing fake or misleading official statements.
The authority concluded by urging the public to report any suspected digital content that is suspicious or misleading and to refrain from forwarding unverified information, ensuring that all communication channels in Pakistan remain safe and trustworthy.
