The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced a two-week deadline for users of unregistered Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to comply with its registration requirements. The crackdown on non-compliant VPNs is scheduled to begin on December 1.
The decision follows instructions from the Ministry of Interior, directing the closure of unregistered VPNs. A review meeting held by the PTA determined that users would be given until November 30 to complete the registration process.
According to officials, the initiative aims to mitigate security risks associated with unregistered VPNs, which can provide access to sensitive information and objectionable content. A PTA representative explained: "Unregistered VPNs present a significant security risk. These networks can circumvent Pakistan's regulations on harmful content and pose a threat to national interests."

The PTA confirmed that a trial blocking of unregistered VPNs was successfully conducted, with plans for a second trial in the near future. From December 1, the regulator will implement strict enforcement measures against any VPNs that remain unregistered.
The move is part of broader efforts by the government to enhance internet security and prevent the spread of illegal or harmful content online. While the grace period allows users time to comply, the PTA has warned that severe action will be taken against non-compliant VPNs after the deadline.
