As the Punjab e-taxi plan continues to edge closer to its inception, the provincial government has entered the final stage by revealing plans to conduct electronic balloting among successful participants.

The electric taxi project, aimed at encouraging environment-friendly transportation as well as providing jobs, was highlighted at a high-level steering committee meeting convened by Provincial Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan.

However, officials stated that the level of response for electric taxi services in Punjab has been significantly large compared to what was expected.

A registration process was undertaken, forming part of over 66,000 applicants, while over 28,000 applicants have finished the process and await state verification. This initiative, supported by a subsidy of Rs3.5 billion, will introduce electric vehicles sourced from China into Pakistani streets.

Terming it a landmark project, Minister Bilal Akbar Khan said that the project of e-taxi in the province of Punjab not only focuses on a clean environment but also aims towards the economic empowerment of people.

Referring to the current target of the project, the minister said that special emphasis has been laid on the youth and women of the country and that the government wants to make it a precedent for other provinces as well.

Under the pilot programme, 1,100 electric taxis will be introduced. Of these, 700 will be given to the fleet owners, while 400 will be allocated to individual owners, of which 100 will be reserved for women.

The government will provide five-year interest-free loans, covering the entire interest amount. Equity support will also be offered, with 50% covered for men and 60% for women. Fleet owners will receive a subsidy between 30 and 40%.

The Bank of Punjab is handling applicant verification to ensure transparency. After balloting, successful candidates will be asked to submit down payments. Authorities expect the first electric taxis in Punjab to hit the roads within three to four months.

Each vehicle will include real-time tracking, a panic button, and a six-year or 300,000-kilometre battery and motor warranty. The government will also waive registration fees and token tax while expanding EV charging stations to support the growing Punjab e-taxi scheme.
