Reddit has revamped its machine translation feature to support Hindi, in line with its efforts to expand its presence in India.
Automatically translating posts and comments into Hindi, the most widely spoken language in India, the update was announced in a blog post.
The rollout of Hindi language support makes the social discussion forum accessible to a wider audience in the Asian subcontinent. Besides, Reddit also disclosed its plans to introduce support for Bengali in future, TechCrunch noted.
“With this expansion, authentic, more people-powered content is now accessible in one of India’s most spoken languages,” read the company's blog post.
Reddit initially began testing machine translation in May 2024 for French, and later released it in more than 35 countries. The social platform also gained support for the Spanish and Portuguese languages by September last year.
Reddit's new AI-powered search feature, Answers, was also rolled out in India along with Australia, Canada, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, and the UK. Before that, it was exclusively available to a limited number of English-speaking users in the US.
With India stepping into Reddit’s spotlight for global growth, the platform recently kicked off expansion of its team in India, recruiting Indians for roles in community building, engineering, growth, and legal departments.
