In a development which might prompt an influx of autonomous driving technologies, electric vehicle-maker (EV maker) heavyweight Rivian has disclosed plans to launch its advanced hands-free driver assistance systems this year, and its "eyes-off" system the next.

The partially autonomous driving system will allow Rivian drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel in 2025, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe on Thursday told Reuters, adding that the system will be toned up the following year to enable drivers to take their eyes off the road, adding "enormous amount of value to customers."

This remarkable innovation comes at a time when the competition among the world's top automakers to offer a fully autonomous driving experience has intensified.

Recent advancements in this domain introduced smart driving features such as lane-keep assist and adaptive cruise control.

Revamping driver assistance technology can drivers their "time back", as they can indulge in other activities like making important phone calls, reading books or sending emails, all while driving, maintained the Rivian CEO.

Scaringe said the development of such features is "something we're hyper focused on."

As of now, Rivian offers the "Rivian Autonomy Platform" in its Gen 2 vehicles. Although the system automates the Rivian driving experience to a great extent but still requires drivers' attention and control of the vehicle.
