Apple and Meta have never enjoyed a cordial relationship, a situation that has deteriorated in recent years due to clashes over privacy, app store policies, and more.

However, the surge in artificial intelligence has led to some unexpected collaborations, with Apple and Meta potentially finding common ground in this area.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple and Meta have engaged in discussions about a partnership that would see Meta’s AI models integrated into iOS 18 for Apple Intelligence.

This potential collaboration would resemble Apple’s current arrangement with ChatGPT, which is the sole third-party partner for Apple Intelligence at present. While Apple’s own on-device and cloud models handle most Apple Intelligence functionalities, the company is open to directing user queries related to ‘world knowledge’ to an external AI model.

For example, with iOS 18 and Apple Intelligence enabled, if a user asks Siri a question like “how to create a five course meal featuring different tastes,” Siri will ask if the user would like to forward the request to ChatGPT.

If the user agrees, OpenAI’s ChatGPT model processes the query, and the response appears directly in Siri’s interface. ChatGPT can also be accessed via the Apple Intelligence Writing Tools panel to assist users in generating text or photorealistic images.

Under the agreement, ChatGPT cannot collect user data and must delete any information after processing requests. This integration is available to users for free, utilising ChatGPT-4. Users can also sign in with their ChatGPT account to access ChatGPT Plus features.

Apple has announced plans to offer a variety of models, indicating that ChatGPT will not remain the sole partner. The Wall Street Journal reports that Meta AI could eventually join the mix, alongside potential collaborations with Google Gemini, Perplexity, Anthropic, and others.

Apple Intelligence is set to launch later this year as part of the iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia updates. Initially, it will be available in US English for the iPhone 15 Pro, and iPad and Mac models with the M1 chip or later. Support for additional languages and regions will be introduced gradually.
