Google Search, the world's most-used search engine, has evolved a lot, thanks to artificial intelligence (EV) at its core, and one of its most significant features is AI Overviews, which delivers direct, summarised responses to user queries using advanced AI.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Head of Google Search Elizabeth Reid recently discussed the technology’s progress and provided a sneak peek into how it’s changing the way we interact with information online.
AI Overviews don't appear in every search but are becoming increasingly common. Their goal is to simplify search by researching various sources to offer a quick summary. AI Overviews also support follow-up questions, enabling user to better interact with it.
While the feature initially faced criticism for having some inaccuracies, Google has extensively improved its reliability and usefulness.
Reid noted that users are now asking more questions than ever, which the company sees this shift as a rise in human curiosity.
She also addressed publishers' concerns regarding loss of traffic, claiming that Google Search offers a different value compared to conversational chatbots like ChatGPT.
