The Government of Sindh has declared that it will set up 100 charging stations for electric vehicles (EVs) throughout the city of Karachi.

EVs have batteries for power and do not use fuel. EVs can help reduce air pollution, as well as alleviate our dependence on petrol and diesel. More citizens in Pakistan are becoming concerned about EVs, so more charging networks will be necessary, particularly in larger cities like Karachi.

During the budget session of the Sindh Assembly, Minister for Energy Syed Nasir Hussain Shah made the announcement, adding that the provincial administration is developing legislation to regulate and promote the use of EVs in Sindh as a part of Sindh's clean energy and climate-friendly goals.

"This step will make Karachi more geared for the future," Shah said, adding that clean and affordable transport is an important component for the government.

He also commented on how Sindh has the most independent local councils in the country and that it is an indicator of how serious it is about the development of sustainable and local governance.

Nonetheless, the minister expressed his concern over the federal government transferring money allocated to Karachi to other areas. "We are not receiving our fair share."

The announcement comes shortly after the federal government launched the National Electric Vehicle (NEV) Policy 2025–30. Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries Haroon Akhtar Khan said the policy supports cleaner transport, especially in cities where the transport sector is a major cause of pollution.
