With Pakistan making significant strides as part of a national digital push, one of the country's biggest telecom acquisitions seems to be at a standstill as Telenor Group is still awaiting the necessary approvals for the acquisition of Telenor Pakistan (Pvt) Ltd and Orion Towers by Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL).
Given that, the transaction of PTCL's significant acquisition is expected to be completed in the second half of 2025, according to Business Recorder.
The acquisition was originally scheduled for finalisation by December 2024; however, it fell prey to delays caused by regulatory approvals, eventually pushing the new deadline to the end of June 2025.
As outlined in Telenor Group’s first-quarter report for 2025, the rescheduling is primarily prompted by pending regulatory approvals.
Earlier this year, in February, Telenor estimated the merger with PTCL to be finalised in the first half of 2025, however, regulatory approvals crucial for Telenor Pakistan's divestment have unfortunately taken longer than expected.
The telecom regulatory authority warned that further delays from the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) regarding the acquisition could jeopardise the agreement between the two companies as the deadline closes in.
