The year 2023 was a busy one for smartphone launches, and 2024 is expected to be just as eventful. Major phone makers like Apple, Samsung and Google each typically launch new devices around the same time every year, introducing more sophisticated cameras, faster processors and enhanced designs.

But 2024 may be different. Tech companies are looking for new ways to infuse generative AI, or artificial intelligence that can create conversational (but not always accurate) responses to prompts based on training data, into their products.

iPhone 16 lineup

Apple launched the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max in September. All iPhone 16 models are expected to get upgraded microphones to improve Siri performance, according to well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

The change would come as Apple is said to be ramping up the iPhone’s AI features. Otherwise, the iPhone 16 family is rumoured to get a new A18 chip from Apple, with the Pro models getting a version called the A18 Pro Bionic.

The camera on the regular iPhone 16 Pro is also expected to get a tetraprism telephoto lens like the iPhone 15 Pro Max, Kuo also reports, meaning it would likely have a 5x telephoto zoom instead of 3x.

AI in Samsung Galaxy S24 series

AI will likely be a big focus for Samsung’s next flagship smartphone. The Galaxy S24 series is expected to feature a new Exynos chip, which will be built on a 3nm process.

The Galaxy S24 will feature a 200-megapixel camera sensor, which would be a significant upgrade over the 108-megapixel sensor found in the Galaxy S21 Ultra.

The Galaxy S24 is also expected to feature an under-display camera, which would allow for a full-screen display without a notch or hole-punch camera.

Google Pixel 9

Google’s Pixel 9 is expected to feature a new Tensor chip, which is designed specifically for Google’s machine learning algorithms. The chip is expected to improve the Pixel’s camera performance, as well as its voice recognition and translation capabilities.

The Pixel 9 is also expected to feature a new camera system, which will include a 108-megapixel primary sensor, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensor and a 5-megapixel macro sensor.

2024 is shaping up to be an exciting year for smartphone enthusiasts. With major phone-makers like Apple, Samsung and Google all expected to launch new devices, we can expect to see more sophisticated cameras, faster processors and enhanced designs.

The introduction of generative AI into smartphones will also be an interesting development to watch, as tech companies look for new ways to improve the smartphone experience.
