Toyota is preparing to announce its third-generation hydrogen fuel cell system at the International Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Expo in Tokyo on February 19, 2025.

This new system is designed to be more durable, efficient, and cost-effective, reinforcing Toyota's commitment to hydrogen-powered vehicles.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell system durability and efficiency

Toyota claims that the new hydrogen fuel cell system offers twice the durability of its predecessor, achieving a lifespan comparable to diesel engines. Additionally, fuel efficiency has improved by 20%, allowing vehicles to travel longer distances on a single fill. The company has also enhanced cell design and manufacturing processes, leading to a significant reduction in production costs.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell system applications

The new system is versatile, making it suitable for passenger cars, commercial vehicles, ships, trains, and even stationary generators. Toyota first introduced its hydrogen fuel cell technology in 2014 with the launch of the Mirai fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV).

Since then, the company has sold around 28,000 Mirai units worldwide and provided more than 2,700 fuel cell systems for buses and generators.

Toyota has long worked on expanding hydrogen fuel cell technology, but challenges such as high fuel costs, storage difficulties, and limited infrastructure have hindered widespread adoption.

The company now claims to have addressed many of these obstacles, but whether these improvements will lead to greater real-world adoption remains to be seen.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell system launch plans

Toyota plans to introduce the third-generation hydrogen fuel cell system to key markets, including Japan, Europe, North America, and China, starting in 2026.
