Amid widespread circulation of allegations on the internet, claiming that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) was mulling over a VPN ban in Pakistan, PTA has announced that it has not plans to ban VPN use in the country.

PTA's clarification on VPN ban was shared during a Senate Committee on Information Technology meeting, where online access and digital privacy remained the centre of discussion.

PTA officials explained that VPNs serve many legitimate purposes, such as secure communication, data protection, and accessing content that is blocked countrywide.

It was also outlined that the imposition of a blanket ban on VPNs would be ineffective and detrimental to businesses that depend on uninterrupted global connectivity.

The telecom authority is reportedly focused on attracting investment and improving digital infrastructure in Pakistan.

During the meeting, the Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) reported that although Pakistan's share in the global IT market is currently below 0.04%, IT exports grew by 20% last year.

To further boost growth, the PSEB introduced the eRozgar programme, aimed at creating jobs and equipping young professionals with essential digital skills.

Analysts believe that with IT exports surpassing $3 billion in 2023, Pakistan has the potential to strengthen its position in the global tech economy, given the country's regulatory policies supporting digital innovation.
