Warner Bros. Games has announced the cancellation of its much-hyped Wonder Woman game and three of its game development studios.
The studios being closed include Monolith Productions, which was working on Wonder Women, Player First Games, the studio responsible for MultiVersus, and Warner Bros. Game San Deigo.
The entertainment giant announced the realignment of its gaming business in a letter to Kotaku, explaining that it is reorienting its studios and investments to concentrate on large franchises such as Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC, and Game of Thrones.
Reason behind the cancellation of Wonder Woman game
The cancellation of Wonder Woman was reportedly prompted by the company's business imperative and not due to the quality of the development team.
The Wonder Woman game, originally announced in 2021, was expected to be an action-adventure game featuring the iconic superhero. However, the developer stated that delivering the best possible experience for the character is no longer feasible under its new direction.
The company also mentioned that it remains committed to producing high-quality games and returning to profitability and growth in 2025 and beyond.
The gaming division has faced difficulties, including the underperformance of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which failed to attract players and is ending its development cycle less than a year after launch.
Additionally, MultiVersus, a crossover fighting game, is being taken offline after a long hiatus and unsuccessful relaunch.
Despite these setbacks, Warner Bros. has seen success with Hogwarts Legacy, which became a major hit in 2023. Reports suggest that the company is now working on a definitive edition of the game with additional content.
