WhatsApp is developing a new feature that will allow users to forward messages and media files such as photos and videos directly to Meta AI.
The feature will be available in the most recent WhatsApp beta release, version 2.25.18.8 on Android, and is being made available to select beta testers.
WhatsApp new AI feature
Interestingly, the new tool aims to provide a more seamless and quicker way to interact with Meta AI, eliminating the need to copy and paste text to the Meta AI chat or having to type something in completely as it had been before.
A user can send or forward messages with a couple of taps from chat to the forwarding method with Meta AI available.
Meta AI is an artificial intelligence-powered virtual assistant. It can answer questions, explain/image summary, help summarise long content into a snippet, and assist users that need quick answers.
With the new forwarding option, messages, pictures and videos will be able to be sent more easily from the Meta chatbot directly.
To see if the forwarding option is enabled in WhatsApp, the user can try to forward any message. If in the forwarding screen there is an option to send to Meta AI (it will show up as Meta AI), then the option is in the beta version you are running.
Users can, when forwarding a message, add a short note to the content so that the AI has more context on what the user is asking.
For example, if a user is sending a picture of something, and they put in a note such as "Is this real?" Then AI can give a much clearer answer.
This feature is helpful for those who want to quickly understand content, ask questions about images or videos, or get brief explanations from Meta AI. It saves time and adds a more interactive experience to WhatsApp.
WhatsApp users still have full control over what they choose to forward. Sharing is optional, and any shared content may be used to improve Meta’s AI systems.
The update is slowly rolling out and may soon reach all users, including those on the stable version of WhatsApp. WhatsApp plans to expand this feature in the coming weeks.
