WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature, which will bring voice and video calls to its web platform, while the update is still under development and currently available to beta testers.

Early reports suggest that users will soon be able to make voice and video calls to their friends and family members directly through WhatsApp Web, without the need for a smartphone. This is part of the company's plan to make the WhatsApp Web experience similar to mobile and desktop apps, letting users switch devices without losing key features.

WABetaInfo reported that WhatsApp Web currently supports only one-on-one voice and video calls. Key expected features include:

  • Start group voice or video calls directly from a group chat.
  • Join ongoing calls through the web browser.
  • Receive call notifications in the browser interface.
  • Users can participate without installing any extra software.

WhatsApp Web is expected to support group calls with up to 32 participants; however, Meta-owned instant messaging platform has yet to officially announce the exact limit of participants during the calls.

WhatsApp, with this update, aims at improving its calling functionality to ensure that all group members can join regardless of the device — whether it's an iPhone or any Android phone — they are using.
