If you were waiting for a reason to step out of your house and look up at the sky, don't worry, a fresh aurora forecast suggests the Northern lights could dip farther south than usual, offering parts of the US a chance to catch the sky's most famous light show.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), conditions could allow for this natural spectacle to be seen even farther from the North Pole than usual.

Best way to see Northern lights

NOAA experts suggested heading north, as close to the magnetic north pole as possible, to improve your chances of seeing Northern lights. It also helps to get away from cities and artificial lighting and find a location, where you can have a clear, unobstructed view of the northern horizon.

It is important to note that timing matters too, as auroras are typically most active in the hours surrounding midnight. NOAA advises planning your viewing between 10pm and 2am, when activity is often strongest.

Ten northern states have an opportunity to view the aurora borealis due to fast solar winds from a coronal hole on the sun. The display of Northern lights could become more immersive as the Kp index is predicted to reach a 5 out of 9.

How to photograph Northern lights?

If you're thinking take images of the Northern lights, then you need to remember some important tips that typical smartphone cameras are capable of capturing impressive images of the aurora; however, to optimise photos, you should turn off the flash, shoot in RAW format, and use a tripod for stability because if you will not follow these steps, then the image might turn disappointing.

iPhone users are advised to use 'Night' mode, while Android users can use their device's 'Pro' mode to have full control while taking photographs of aurora.

With these tips in mind, viewers may find this light show an unforgettable opportunity to witness the beauty of the northern lights.
