If all goes well in line with the federal government’s plans, residents of Islamabad will soon benefit from public Wi-Fi hotspots in select parks and along metro routes this year.
State Minister for IT Shaza Fatima Khawaja, during a Senate Standing Committee meeting on Information Technology, brought the development to light.
The initiative to bring free internet in Islamabad comes in the absence of a citywide public Wi-Fi for Islamabad; however, with the initiative in the works, it appears that the government is adamant about launching connectivity projects.
It should be noted that the federal government has already allocated funds to fully implement free public Wi-Fi by the end of this year.
The IT minister highlighted that the IT ministry is also working for providing Wi-Fi access in government schools and hospitals.
The most startling aspect of the development is that approximately 100 schools in Islamabad reportedly lack internet connectivity, prompting plans to install fibre optics in schools, hospitals, and police stations to enhance online education and e-health services.
To further enhance connectivity, underground fibre optic cables are being installed to improve services in these essential government buildings.
It was also outlined that efforts are also underway regarding the “Smart Islamabad” project, which is aimed at modernising the city’s infrastructure and improve overall connectivity.
